Borghild Margrethe Dahl was born on February 5, 1890, in Minneapolis to Norwegian immigrant parents. From a very young age, she suffered from severely impaired vision, having no sight in one eye and being legally blind in the other. This did not stop her from excelling academically. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota in 1912 and a Master of Arts from Columbia University in 1923.
